Young adults love fantasy and science fiction novels, but more than just sci fi fans will appreciate the fantasy world created by Scott Westerfeld in his Uglies trilogy.

Novels written specifically for the young adult began to accumulate in the sixties, but many titles published in the last few years would please even adult readers. Scott Westerfeld’s science fiction books definitely appeal to more than just teens. Each book in his best-selling Uglies trilogy will keep all readers baited until the very last page.

Uglies is the First in this Science Fiction Series

In the futuristic world of Uglyville and New Pretty Town, 16 is the magic age when children receive an operation that transforms them from a horrible ugly into a perfect, beautiful pretty. After the operation, new pretties move to a paradise where parties last all night long and no one has any responsibilities other than being pretty.

Tally can’t wait to turn 16, get her operation, and move to New Pretty Town to be with all her friends, but her new friend Shay isn’t so sure being pretty is all it’s cut out to be. Shay’s fear of turning pretty drives her to run away from Uglyville right before her 16th birthday.

Tally is forced to follow her and expose the hideout of rebels to the evil Special Circumstances or else they might never turn pretty. What she discovers are terrible secrets about the operation she has always longed for. To expose the terrible secret and save everyone, Tally must sacrifice herself, and so she surrenders to Special Circumstances and allows them to turn her pretty -- even if it means losing everything.

Pretties Continues Westerfeld’s Saga

Tally’s surgery was a success in her eyes, and now her beauty, popularity, and all-night parties have combined to make her life seem perfect. Tally should be happy, but she can’t shake the feeling that something is wrong.

When a message arrives from the world Tally once knew, she follows the clues that lead her to a note from her ugly self and two pills that would cure her pretty brain. This is the beginning of her adventure to escape the city, find the hideout of her ugly friends, and bring the cure for the surgery back to New Pretty Town before the one person she would die to save is gone forever.

But Special Circumstances are always there in the shadows of her mind – watching, waiting, and listening for her to make a mistake. When she does, they will be there in an instant because they only want one thing – Tally as one of their own.

Specials Completes the Sci Fi Trilogy

Their cruel beauty has always haunted Tally’s dreams, and now she is one of them. As a Special Circumstance, Tally’s job is to terrorize the uglies, police the pretties, and protect the secret of what the operation does to a brain.

When her group of Specials is assigned the task of finding the rebels in The Smoke and destroying them, Tally begins to remember feelings from her past that make her hesitate doing the job she is programmed to complete.

Soon she finds herself tracking the man she loves. She follows him to The Smoke and quickly realizes the rebel cause is much bigger than her and the Specials had imagined. It is no longer a camp out in the middle of the forest but a complete and functioning city – a special circumstance that must be taken care of.

War breaks out and causes tragedy like Tally has never experienced. As the Specials fall victim one by one, the responsibility of stopping the war falls on Tally alone. She must be able to stop the destruction and the end of Special Circumstances before the ones who created her take her through the cruel de-specialization process that will leave her normal forever.
